Brown was active in the Hudson River region from the late 18th Century until about 1850.  A chest of his tools and instruments includes:  a vernier compass made by Henry Gattey, New York (ca. 1797-1804); a text by Amos Eaton (1830); sunglasses; a traveler's inkwell; and a daguerreotype photograph of Mr. Brown.  Little is known of A. Brown's surveying activities.  (Photograph from a private collection)"
